If you enjoy the 80’s genre, then a TV show set in the era is sure to be right up your street. The Amazon Prime Video series Red Oaks certainly fits that bill. Released in the fall of 2015, I feel like Red Oaks went largely unnoticed and is still a great watch for anyone who may have missed out. Red Oaks ran for a total of three seasons and tells the story of David, a college student played by Craig Roberts. David gets a job working at Jewish country club Red Oaks during his summer break of 1985.
In the same spirit as best online casinos au, Red Oaks prides itself on being a country club of the very highest standing, and club president Doug Getty, played by Paul Reiser, makes it his duty to ensure that continues to be the case. Getty is overbearing and immediately crosses paths with David, who himself takes an interest in Getty’s daughter to create a really compelling dynamic. While David’s relationship with Doug has its ups and downs, there is definitely a type of affinity between the two characters and I think Doug may actually be reminded of a younger version of himself when interacting with David.
The Red Oaks supporting cast includes Dirty Dancing’s very own Jennifer Grey, as well as the hilarious Richard Kind in the role of David’s father. One of the other key players in the show is Ennis Esmer as Nash Nasser. Nash is the head tennis coach at Red Oaks and takes on a kind of mentor role to protagonist David. However, it isn’t long before Nash’s insecurities become evident, and it is actually David who plays the adult in the relationship.
Finally, Oliver Cooper deserves a special mention as David’s best friend Wheeler. He is both comical and captivating in equal measure, and the actor just feels like a perfect fit for the part. All three seasons of Red Oaks is still available to stream on Amazon Prime. It is a show I can highly recommend for anyone, but particularly to those who have anything more than a passing interest in 80s culture.
