Who doesn’t love a present day TV show with an 80s theme? We all hanker after that golden era, and love to relive some of the nostalgia via the medium of television. Some of the scenes can be like a crazy vegas casino, and there is often a fun element to proceedings. Here are some of our favourite 1980s themed TV shows.
Red Oaks
Having gone somewhat under the radar being an Amazon exclusive, the Joe Gangemi and Gregory Jacobs creation Red Oaks is a real treat for fans of the 80s genre. Set in a Jewish country club in New Jersey, Red Oaks stars Craig Roberts as protagonist David Myers. David is a college student working his summer break at the club. His is a real coming of age story which runs over the course of three seasons. Over notable cast members include Jennifer Grey and Paul Reiser.
The Goldbergs
With a total of eight seasons already in the bag, The Goldbergs has really stood the test of time. The show is based around the childhood memories of youngest son Adam. Key roles are played by Jeff Garlin as Dad of the Goldberg family Murray, as well has hapless brother Barry played by 27 year old Troy Gentile. Although reviews of the first season were mixed, The Goldbergs has since received critical acclaim and been syndicated worldwide.
Freaks and Geeks
Freaks and Geeks has a truly ensemble cast and launched the careers of a number of famous Hollywood stars. Having only run for one season, Freaks and Geeks gained somewhat of a cult following and it’s a real shame that Paul Feig wasn’t able to continue the story beyond an initial 18 episodes. In fact, only 12 aired on TV. The remainder were since available on DVD and now various streaming services. As is the case with best usa casino games, this teen comedy/drama often appears in all time top lists.
Stranger Things
Another huge hit for Netflix, Stranger Things has proved once again that the 80s rule! A science fiction horror series, Stranger Things is the brainchild of writer/directors the Duffer Brothers. The brothers actually serve as showrunners and have been very much hands on since the show premiered in 2016. Millie Bobby Brown and David Harbour have been the real breakout stars from Stranger Things, and it has been delightful to see Winona Ryder back in a high profile hit. With season 4 on the horizon, fans haven’t got long to wait for what made be the penultimate season of the show.
Halt and Catch Fire
An American period drama, Halt and Catch Fire comprised of 40 episodes in total and debuted to favourable reviews. The series definitely improved as it went on, but the story of former IBM sales executive Joe MacMillan was never able to capture the public’s imagination in terms of viewing figures. Only the first ever episode was able to surpass the one million viewers mark. However, this is well worth a watch for any fans of the 80s genre.
